OUGD504 Design for Print.

  • here goes format design and final folder design of my booklet

Title page design

For my title page, and front cover of my publication, I want to create something that is interactive and exciting for the viewer, so that they want to pick up my publication and interact more with it and get excited about it.
This is where I think print processes would work really well to create a tactile front page that isn't purely type and/or image. Looking ion different print processes and stock that I could use to create an interesting feel and/or look to my publication:

This book uses thermochromatic ink to hide images behind the black of the ink which I thinks works incredibly well, especially in creating a dynamic and interactive page. I think that this would work well for me, especially with a title like 'Print is dead/Print is alive' - the print would come alive when the ink disappears.

I also really like the use of split pages within this book, as it gives the pages more interesting qualities and is more engaging with the reader. I would like to incorporate something like this in my publication too, so that the pages inside the folder are still interesting to look at and read through

I have also been thinking about what kind of stock I could use on the front of my publication.
The outside of the publication has to be strong and sturdy enough to house the pages inside, much like a folder or binder. Usually folders use a thick card or thin cardboard that is covered with a sticky back plastic which is usually shiny, or a strong paper.

Although this works well to keep the folder strong and sturdy while also keeping it fairly waterproof, it doesn't look interesting at all and wouldn't stand out at all.

For the title page, I was initially thinking that I want to keep it quite simple on the surface, as I would be using thermochromatic inks on the title to reveal something else behind the inks. I have decided to go with the title of 'print is alive' to show the fact that there is something more to the print.

I have also thought about the idea of printing this ink onto a black stock, meaning that the whole page would look just black, but when the ink is rubbed it would reveal a colour/picture/pattern underneath, giving more of a contrast to the   black stock. This would also work really well for the title of the print 'coming alive' when it is rubbed over.

From here I decided to test this out with some screen printing of different colours onto the background of the title to see how it would look on different stocks and with different colours.

My first attempt of screen printing was very successful in showing me how the print would work on different stocks and using different colours. It worked really well on white cartridge paper, but on the black paper the ink sinked into the stock very readily and so if i were to use black in my final piece I would need to use a coated paper so that the ink would sit on top.
Next, I need to see how the print would work with the thermochromatic ink and whether it would work well to use on top of these colour prints.
