For this brief we were put into groups and given a job title to build a brand around. My group was given Dredging, which we weren't really sure what it was to begin with, but after some initial research we found that it was in fact the cleans of water beds, in canals and lakes. We found that this was an environmentally stable way of maintaining the waterways and so this is the angle we decided to go with for our brand.
For the brief within our group I was in charge of creating the brand guidelines, meaning that every piece of material for the brand has to adhere to these rules.
We decided to call our brand "Iridescent Waters" to show how our brand is clean and beneficial to the clean waters. After Choosing the name and also the colours that we would use, we split up into our own roles within the group to work on different aspects of the brand.
I was working on the brand guidelines handbook, and so the decisions the other members of my group made were all impacting on what I wrote. This was where we had to communicate well so that the brand felt and looked together.
I am very proud of the work that we all managed to get done within one day. I think that we all worked together really well and this shows in the quality of our brand. I always find that shorter briefs are much easier for me to work with as I think that I work well under pressure, and I think that this shows in my work that I produced during this one day brief. I also think that working in a group for this project was really beneficial to me as I sometimes find it hard to work alongside people with strong opinions, but the group I worked with here were all easy to talk with and we all collaborated well.

Studio Brief 2 OUGD505.
For The restaurant I am creating I have decided to name it "M", as it is modern malaysian food. I think that this represents the non traditional aspect of the restaurant whilst also showcasing the kind of flavours and experience you can expect at the restaurant.
For the logo I wanted to keep it fairly simple, with a small amount of decoration so that the modern aspect of the restaurant is shown.
These three colours, as well as black will be used within the restaurant and its brand to create a more dynamic brand.
For the business card to follow the brand I wanted to keep it quite simple, but use all the colour ways individually so that there is a variation.

The final logo I think works well to modernise the restaurant while also staying quite simplistic and interesting.
However, I want to create different colour ways to use within the restaurant and its branding to differentiate between menus and other parts of its brand.

Signage
For the sign I wanted to create a wooden laser cut sign that would hang outside of the restaurant, but unfortunately I was unable to book myself a slot with the laser cutter, and so I have mad to make a mock up to show what this would look like.
For the promotion of the restaurant I want to create some posters that use the logo to create something interesting, but perhaps without the use of text to illustrate what the restaurant is. But then how will people know hat kind of food the restaurant makes?
I could perhaps make two different posters, one using the logo purely as a pattern etc, and then another with more information on it about the poster.
These three posters would be used closer to where the restaurant is situated so that people walking around in that area will recognise the brand and want to visit the restaurant. I think that these would also work well in the shop window, and also as a front cover for the monthly zine of recipes.
Menu Design
For the menu design I want to keep it clean and simple, mainly because it needs to be easy to read and understand, but also because the design will fit in with the rest of the brand. For the food I chose a select few traditional but delicious Malaysian foods, but they would be brought up to date with cooking techniques and how they are presented.
On the back of each menu, there will be the same pattern design as on the posters and napkins.
Other printed material that I have created includes screen printed napkins and takeaway bags for the restaurant. I wanted to screen print these as I think it gives the brand another dimension, and it is also much more environmentally friendly than digital print as it uses no electricity.
Overall I am happy with my brand, I think that the concept works well with the type of atmosphere I am trying to create and I also think that the restaurant looks and feels how I wanted it to.

Summative Evaluation. OUGD503
Summative Evaluation – Laura Tomlinson
This module has been very beneficial to me in a
number of ways.
I have improved upon my communication skills with
clients and collaborative partner and this is shown through the briefs where my
clients were happy with what I designed and I created something that they were
happy to use themselves.
My favourite brief of this module was the Body Shop
D&AD brief, where I created a campaign for positive body image and
promotional posters for products. This is where I was able to use many of my
skills to create an overall piece of design that I am really happy and proud
of. My skills in painting and pattern design were expanded upon greatly and I
would love to carry on improving these skills and using these more in my design
work. I am also very happy with my business cards that I made for artist and
illustrator Ellie Tomlinson. The cards gave me an opportunity to use my
InDesign skills and layout design skills to create a business card that both my
client and me were very happy with.
The lowest point of this module was working with my
partner on my collaborative brief. It was extremely hard for me to communicate
with my partner as she was absent for much of the time of the brief, and the
work that we discussed each of us would do wasn’t fully completed. I am not
happy with the complete brief that we submitted to D&AD but because of time
constraints and my partner not showing when we were supposed to meet, we were
forced to submit the work that we had. However, I am happy with the work that I
submitted for this brief. The
posters and the competition promotional material I think worked well to expand
on the brief and show new ways of reaching the target audience of Purdey’s
drinks.
Overall with this module I am happy with how it has
gone. If I were to do it again I would have liked to choose more briefs to
complete and perhaps one or two longer briefs so that my design work could be
sustained over a longer period of time, rather than doing shorter briefs. But
what I have done, I am very proud of and am happy that my skills have been
improved upon.
Business Card. OUGD503.
My sister is an artist and illustrator based in Bristol, so she has asked me to create a business card that she can hand these out to those that are interested in her work.
The brief was to create something simple that showcases some of her work on the actual business card, so I created a design that is easily changed to input different parts of her work as it progresses.
The final business card is 80mm x 100mm, which is slightly larger than a regular business card, but I think that the size is a good size to showcase her work.
Mostly working with this client was fairly straightforward and we both communicated well together to create a design that we are both happy with. However, one problem was that she failed to send me any images of her work before the deadline for this module, and so for this submission the work displayed on the business card is there for example only. Once the client sends me the images of her work, I will be able to print the business cards and send them to her to use.
