Pstcards, photoshop brief. OUGD405

Starting with one of my images I wanted to create a series of postcards that were similar and so looked like thy would be a set. I also wanted them to be simple but interesting, so i decided to try a repeat pattern all over. As my shape was a cross i used a picture of a window and repeated it numerous times on a A5 piece, and then used the contrast and brightness, and the levels layers to brighten it up a bit. I then changed the hue of the original postcard to give the piece a bit of colour, and then did this again 5 times to create my 5 postcards, all with a different colour. I like the simplicity of the postcards and i think that they look really good both on their own and as a set.

Final Piece. RESEARCH, COLLECT, COMMUNICATE: PRODUCT OUGD405.

Overall I am really happy with this piece of work. It has fulfilled the brief well and i am really pleased with how the info graphic part of the booklet has turned out, especially since i haven't done anything like that before. I only wish that i could have had more time doing this as I really enjoyed it and would have liked to have gone a lot further with this. I did miss the first week of this project after returning from christmas, and although i asked for the brief i didn't get it until the second week when i was back in uni, and so i would have preferred to have the extra time developing my ideas and looking more into professional processes to make the booklet look better, especially the binding. But overall, in the time that i had i feel that the booklet works well, looks good and fulfils the brief well.

Magazine inside OUGD405

For the info graphic element of the magazine i want to create a head to head page of the electoral race between Obama and Romney. I have collected research of facts and statistics from both sides and will use this to create a mainly text and number based info graphic.

Firstly, in the centre of the two pages i wanted to create an image of both Obama and Romneys' faces, kind of like the cover of the movie 'face off'

Starting with two images of Obama and Romney, I used photoshop to combine their faces to make this image.
Using this as the centre of a double page spread i built up text and numbers on each side showing how the race figures compare between the two candidates.

The space in the middle of the page is to allow room for the binding of the booklet after printing.

throughout the rest of the booklet i wanted to include pictures of Barack Obama alongside information about the days events and so i created two more double page spreads that included timings for the days events.

I wanted to write something on the back page of the booklet, and so i looked for quotes from Obama and a very fitting one was 'Four more years' which he tweeted just after it was announced that he won't the race.

Looking at other magazines and booklets i was unsure whether i should include a smaller piece inside the book just to make it look more interesting, and so i had the idea of including a 'Vs' insert in the middle page spread of the booklet.
This would be back to back as just one page in the centre, but then after printing and trying to mock it up as a final piece the vs page got in the way of the two faces in the centre of the booklet and didn't look right inside the booklet, and so i decided to scrap that idea.

Using the scripts option on the file menu, you can upload multiple images that can then be put together to create an image that find the median of all the images put together. This means that only the most regular point in all the images is put into the final image, meaning that all of the people in the image have disappeared.

Then to change the sky so that it looks more like a real sky you can open up one of the photos with a nice looking sky, and then copy and paste it onto the top of the layered image. Then using the magic select tool, select the sky and then select the inverse so that the buildings and ground are selected and then go to edit and cut to reveal the image underneath, leaving the sky as it is.

After this we learned how to create a contact sheet for the photographs we took during the week of a particular shape.
First in File, go to automate and select contact sheet.

Then select all of the photos that you want on the contact sheet, and change the settings like sizing and spacing.

Once the contact sheet is made you can then make it into a pdf file so that it is easily printed and accessible.

Initial Design ideas. OUGD405

These are some of the initial ideas for how i will present the Date on the front of the magazine. I need this to stand out on the front of the magazine as the date is a very important part of this event and the magazine is specific to this date.

For the front cover of my magazine i wanted to keep it simple with just the important information so that it was obvious what it was about without being over cluttered. I decided to use just an image of Obama or the capitol building with the important date clearly stated so that it was clear what the magazine/booklet was about.
