Message and delivery development -OUGD403

For this brief i had the idea of communication and using the line as a representation of a telephone wire, or a string between two cans that you can talk between. Using the imagery of the whale and the canary makes it obvious that this is the story of a whale that has made human like sounds, and the asking of the question shows the curiosity that I want to portray. I did originally keep this poster mostly handmade because i like the way that the type flows within the telephone wire, but after testing this out on the stock I don't think hat it works very well as a handmade piece, and so I am going to try to re-create something similar on illustrator and see how this works.

Print workshop - OUGD403

Vinyl cut print.

Wood block print.

Mono print.

I have really enjoyed learning these new ways to print and use type within printing. My favourite way to print out of these three processes has been the mono prints because it is easy to create multiple different prints and you can't be sure how each one will look until you do it. The prints that i got from this process are all really interesting and i loved playing around with layering the prints and re printing things after changing their position or turning them upside down.

Studio Brief: Message and delivery - OUGD403

As part of this brief we were asked to create a set of three posters, one using type, one using image and one combining both image and type. These posters are to be based on the initial research we have on a news story from October 23rd. As my story was quite scientific and also a little humorous i want to keep these posters quite lighthearted and visually interesting.

Design Principles - OUGD404

As part of a a task set during the design principles session we had to think of different ways of categorising letterforms, and as a group we came up with 5. Serif, sans serif, script/calligraphy, handwritten and serif bold.

However, after doing this we looked into different ways of categorising the letterforms and found that it is best to categorise them in terms of where they came from and what kind of material is used to make them non digitally. These categories are stone, sable, bone, wood, lead and silicone.

Alphabet soup - Typeface. OUGD403

These are two quick designs I have done using the typeface I have been working with to show what my final outcome may look like. I think the second one with the letter forms the same size works best out of the two, but I need to find a way to also incorporate the glyphs I have done onto the final piece.

Alphabet Soup - Typeface OUGD403

From the research that I've done on my partner and some typography I have started to play around with some different scales and fills for the type. We had a group crit on Friday and the feedback I got from that was that I needed to look more into how the letter forms will sit on the page and to look into the negative space of the space a bit more and so I have used this to come up with some more interesting ideas for the final outcome.
I want to create a piece that is bold and outgoing much like how my partner is, and so I think it would work really well if the type is lots of different sizes on the page and overlaps to show that my partner is complex and confident.

The final typeface that i have chosen to work with is 'Elephant' by Julia. I chose this because although it looks quite bold and simple, there are a few little details which make the typeface more interesting, which i think shows the confidence in my partner.
